Chance to nominate community champ in Fleetwood

Fleetwood Town Council has launched its Community Excellence Award for this year, following its inauguration last year.

The first recipient of the award was Flakefleet head teacher, Dave McPartlin, who was recognised last summer for for his outstanding service to the residents of Fleetwood, highlighting the town nationwide and for bringing community spirit to the wider community.

He received a handsome star-shaped glass award in front of delighted pupils.

Now the council is looking for this year’s deserving recipient and wants residents in the town to put forward their nominations.

The town council’s community engagement and development officer, Lauren Harrison,said; “This year, we ask that if you know an outstanding individual who has gone above and beyond for our community or has been a pillar of strength for our residents during these unprecedented times, that they are nominated for this accolade.

“It could be any resident of Fleetwood who you believe is a deserving individual.

“The Community Excellence Award working party and panel will select a winner from all of our entries and will be looking at presenting the award at the end of October.”

Mr McPartlin was a popular choice last year.

He and his crew of youngsters charmed the nation with their unique rendition of Take That’s Rule The World in the final of the popular ITV show - but it was in recognition of his impact on Fleetwood that the award was given.

After receiving the award, he said: “This came as a genuine surprise and I was so overwhelmed by it I was actually lost for words, I didn’t know what to say.

“It is the local stuff that is most important so to receive this award from Fleetwood Town Council means a lot to me.”

Last year Mr McPartlin was one of several individuals nominated by the town council itself but from now on the council wants nominations to be made by members of the public.

Coun Mary Stirzaker, chairman of the town council, said: “If we support good work in the community, it encourages others to get involved.”
