I wrote, just a few days ago, that we’d be able to tell just how real Trump’s “Syria Withdrawal” was by how loud, and how strong, the establishment voices came out against it.
The media (and collected punditry) will likely play the “poor little Kurds” card a lot in the next few days…[this] will determine how much of a genuine threat to the establishment agenda this “withdrawal” really is.
Turns out, it might be a lot.
Every single media outlet is variously “shocked”, “appalled” or “disgusted”. Politicians from both sides of the house (and Israel) have condemned him. Media pundits, ex-generals. Combat veterans in the Independent.
Even good-old Fox News, Trump’s only real support in the media, have finally had to choose between supporting the President and supporting war. They chose war.
Nowhere is this seething hatred of Trump, and adoration of the Kurds stronger than Hollywood. A population of ill-informed moralising egos have decided Trump’s “betrayal” of the Kurds is his greatest crime, despite having very little idea who the Kurds are or what (if anything) they have ever done.
Still, there’s not to reason why, there’s just to tweet and lie.
It’s one thing to be a lying narcissistic fucking moron. But when your greedy self interest causes the deaths of our ally, it’s time for the GOP to protect US from this reckless threat to our security. Impeach the MF!

Compare the hysteria about “protecting the Kurds” today, to the tone of commentary on the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The difference is startling.
Hell, compare it to Yemen. Were there this many hashtags about Yemen? Of course not.
The Hollywood outrage machine only kicks into gear when American troops WITHDRAW, but never when they ATTACK.
All of the US aggression against Syria was met with a shrug by these same people, and the hundreds of others like them. If they even knew it was happening.
But it’s not just Hollywood, even the “new wave” of Brave Democrat Women were keen to oppose withdrawing US troops from a country they are illegally occupying in breach of international law.
Trump’s move will not put an end to endless wars. What it *will* do is reward Russia, Iran, and ISIS.

This is moronic. The US troops at the time of withdrawal were (for once) not firing at anyone, sat around doing nothing. They were acting as a political deterrent to Kurdish genocide. Its the only time US troops have been useful to anyone in stopping Barbaric head chopping jihadists. Not only that but trump hasn’t withdrawn troops from Syria, hes just moved them away from the Kurdish north east. Also, you fail to mention the slight issue that the second largest oil reserves in the world are right under this region. I feel extremely sorry for the Kurds, not just the ones in Syria, but also the ones in Iraq and Iran. They have a separate language and culture from the three countries to which they have been annexed to. But the chances of the west doing a nation building exercise [as per Israel] after world war 1 is not on. The Kurds were offered a good deal of self determination within Syria by President Assad and no doubt will still get similar treatment in the future. However, there’s no such thing as the “SDF”, there is one Syria and one army (SAA). Anyone who thinks different are pro-American shills or delusioned anarchists, moved by green/feminist principals. Kurds spread across 4 countries, why should anyone give them a large part of economically important Syria when Assad is offering them more self-determination than any other country they inhabit?

The Kurdish who worked with the Ottoman govt in removing the original inhabitants received the victims’ lands (and often their young women) as rewards. The downside is that the Turks expected the Kurds to be grateful enough to give up their languages (the Kurds speak a number of languages and dialects) and become standardised Turks.

His groundbreaking vaginal and anal sex with a thirteen year old? His innovative giving her Quaaludes? Plus old standbys like Alcohol? Not stopping when begged?

I have to object at dragging Roman Polanski through the mud again in a discussion of Hollywood hypocrisy. The decades-long debacle involving Polanski and Samantha Geimer was the fault of a corrupt judge , Laurence Rittenband, who ignored the plea bargain that the lawyers for both Polanski and Geimer had worked out (since Geimer was unwilling to face Polanski in a court of law) and determined to put Polanski away for 40+ years, in violation of Californian law at the time. Anyone forced to face a future like that would have been well advised to flee the US. Both Polanski’s legal team and Samantha Geimer’s legal team supported the removal of Rittenband as the judge on the case. Polanski made a private apology to Samantha Geimer in 2009 and a public apology to her in 2011. He acknowledged that he did wrong to her. The civil lawsuit Geimer brought against Polanski in the 1990s and the out-of-court settlement should have been the end of the matter. But the US government and the mainstream news media keep dredging up the crime, for reasons that probably have very little to do with righting the wrongs that Polanski did to Geimer, no matter how much anguish continuing publicity brings to Geimer and her family. The US pressured Switzerland to arrest Polanski after the episode in which Switzerland refused to divulge the identities of US citizens who had accounts with the Union Bank of Switzerland. If the US government had been interested in seeing justice done, it either should have taken up France’s offer to retry Polanski in a French court (because Polanski is a French citizen, not an American citizen) or have the Californian government or the Californian Attorney General re-examine Judge Rittenband’s conduct. The US government has not done any of these things. It was Samantha Geimer and her mother’s choice for Samantha not to appear in court to testify against Polanski (for reasons best known to them) and so that is why their lawyers and Polanski’s lawyers agreed to a plea bargain under which Polanski was required to undergo psychiatric evaluation, spend about 90 days in jail and then perform a year’s community service. The judge mishandled the case (according to you and Polanski’s lawyers) so therefore a child rapist and sodomist should get off. Is that it? I am not sure what citizenships he held at the time of the crime, but that crime was on an American child, committed in the US, in a jurisdiction where the movie industry has influence. I am only stating the facts of the case regarding Polanski’s crime and I am not twisting anything. I am sympathetic towards Samantha Geimer because she has suffered from the constant media treatment of her as though she were still a 13-year-old child. She has made her peace with Polanski, however imperfect it is, and moved on. She has not been traumatized by the rape. The US govt and media seem hellbent however to keep pursuing Polanski wherever he goes. There may well be an underlying reason for this that has less to do with the rape and more with the fact that Polanski is not under Hollywood control and can make the films he wants to make, even though his work since 1978 has mostly been quite ordinary compared to earlier films he did. The mess that surrounds Polanski and Geimer to this day and which unfortunately binds them both to their dying days has to be seen in the context of a flawed legal system that (a) allowed a corrupt judge to flout the law , by taking it into his own hands and deciding arbitrarily to put Polanski away for 40 or 45+ years; and (b) was designed and had evolved in such a way that Geimer, had she decided to testify, might have been exposed to media and general public ridicule and her mother would have been vilified for allowing her daughter to go into a situation where she was raped and sodomised.
